Child Support Application — Sonoma County

Child support exists to protect children — not to punish parents. When appropriate, California law encourages both parents to contribute financially so minor children have access to stable housing, food, healthcare, education, and basic necessities.
If you believe you may qualify for child support, applying is often in the best interests of your child. We encourage any parent who may qualify to explore the official county process so children can receive as much support as possible from both parents, when appropriate.
Free Child Support Services Through Sonoma County
Sonoma County offers free child support services to eligible parents through the Department of Child Support Services (DCSS). The county handles the case directly — including establishing, enforcing, and modifying child support orders when appropriate. This is a free service handled by the county.

Child Support & Custody
Child support and child custody are legally separate issues. Parenting time does not automatically eliminate child support obligations, and support may be ordered even when custody or visitation is limited.
Our Role in the Community
Sonoma County Paralegal does not replace the county child support agency and does not charge for child support applications handled by the county. Our role is to provide clear information, official links, and general guidance so families can access legitimate services without confusion.
Supporting Children Comes First
When appropriate, child support helps ensure children receive stable housing, food, medical care, education, and a higher quality of life. California’s child support system is designed to place children’s needs first while remaining fair to both parents.
